During my time in Hefei I recommend many teaching resources and instigated the development of a teachers resource centre. I have a detailed knowledge of many current ESL and IELTS teaching resources and have taught successfully from course books in my classes. I have had a key role in curriculum development especially for the Australian culture course, with me being recalled to Perth in August 2010 where I reviewed some of the readers used for the IIT off shore programme in China . One of my major projects for IIBT in Hefei was the construction of the 3 Plus 1 programme website a Weebly domiain in 2010 which was later revamped in a new domain at http://iibthefei3plusfoundation.zohosites.com/ l which is accessable in China. I am also currently developing a website for the IIBT Australian University Foundation Programme Anhui Vocational Arts College. Click here for that programme. Prior to position I was supervising an University Pathway for Senior High School students in Jiangsu Province where I monitored the quality of programs, inducting and training teachers from all over the world, for the various learning sites in Jiangsu Province with an emphasis on IELTS and EAP. Plus I supported teachers in the preparation and delivery of some British A Level Subjects.
I have also been employed in holiday programmes with one summer engaged the professional development of middle school teachers in Suzhou (July/August2007) and in the following year taught Middle School students in Xuzhou for a JESIE Programme (July 2008) I have also ran a 10 day IELTS preparation course for IIBT students at Zhejiang Normal University Jinhua for the Australian Universities Programme (January 2009) and in July 2009 taught small children in a local training school. More recently I conducted two 10 day training programmes for Middle School English teachers in Jiangsu Province for JESIE in Jurong and Xinyi (July/August 2012) drawing teachers from surrounding middle schools.
Apart from full time work I have been employed on a part time basis as a staff trainer in some of Hefei’s exclusive 5 star Hotels such as the Holiday Inn and Howard Johnson Hotel, thus broadening my experience and enhancing my understanding of the requirements and demands of multinational corporations in terms of English training and general etiquette of their employees. I have also been employed on a sessional basis in staff training for the University of Science and Technology Hefei 2011-2012. I also in 2013 I trained the senior high school teachers at Hefei Foreign Language School in teaching IELTS preparation classes as these teachers had little experience in such classes.
From 2010 to the present time I have worked in various IELTS Test Centres within the Shanghai Examination District mostly in Hefei and Nanjing with occasional tests in Shanghai and Hangzhou as an Invigilator and later completing my Certification as an IELTS Examiner for both the speaking and writing components of the exam and engaged in IELTS Examining on regular basis. I grade scripts in the Shanghai marking on average 3 times a month.
I have a deep understanding of the Chinese education system and the aspirations and challenges of Chinese students and presently have an academic interest the developing a Contextualized Communicative Approach in teaching Chinese learners and also on the peculiarities of Chinese learners language study strategies. I believe my experience in China would be beneficial in your programme I has have a deep understanding of the social and academic needs of Chinese students who are a major source of foreign students coming into Australia.
Presently I am married to a Chinese citizen so I have empathy for Chinese culture and family life making me more sensitive to many aspects of Chinese culture which I believe has furthered enhanced the students learning experiences. As our son is now 3 1/2 we also consider the life style offered in Australia would be better suited to his temperament so now am prepared to adjust to the employment challenges and opportunities I may face in Australia and have a growing interest in Adult Learning, Literacy and Numeracy with the potential to work in the Vocational Education Sector on Australia and currently undertaking studies in this area.
